Question (Q-33)
After performing Witr, I realised that I had made a major mistake in the Fardh of ‘Ishā due to which it was necessary to repeat the Fardh of ‘Ishā. Do I have to repeat the Sunan and Witr as well?

Answer:
When you come to know of the error in the Fardh of ‘Ishā after having completed the units besides the Fardh units, including the Witr, you should repeat the two units (Rak’āt) Sunan that are performed after the Fardh Rak’āt, after you have repeated the Fardh Rak’āt. You do not need to repeat the Witr.

It is stated in Al Hidāyah,

ثم تبين أنه صلي العشاء بغير طهارة فعنده يعيد العشاء والسنة دون الوتر لأن الوتر فرض علي حدة عنده

“If it then becomes clear that he performed the Fardh of ‘Ishā without Wudhū, then according to Al Imām Abū Hanīfah (رحمه الله), he will repeat the Fardh and the Sunnah but not the Witr. This is because the Witr is a separate Fardh according to him.”

It is stated in Al Bināyah Sharh Al Hidāyah,

و أما إعادة السنة فلکونها تبعا للعشاء

“As for repetition of Sunnah, this is because the Sunnah are following on to the Fardh of ‘Ishā.”

Allah (تعالى) Knows Best.
