Question (Q-04):

What is the ruling in relation to reciting Qunūt prayer aloud during the congregation of Witr in Ramadhān?

Answer:

It is against the Sunnah for an Imām, his follower and similarly a person who is praying Salāh alone to recite Qunūt (supplication) aloud. It is stated in Durr ul Mukhtār;

مخافتا علي الأصح مطلقا ولو إماما لحديث “خير الدعاء الخفي”

“Unrestrictedly (Qunūt should be recited) silently according to the most authentic position. This is the case even if the reciter is an Imām. The reason for this is due to the Hadīth, “The best supplication is the one recited silently.”

It is stated in Radd ul Muhtār in commentary of the aforementioned words of Durr ul Mukhtār;

أفاد أن المخافتتة ليست بواجبة

This means that the derivation of proof from the Hadīth proves that silence in recitation of the supplication is not Wājib (obligatory).
