Question (Q-17):

Is it permissible to perform several prayers after having performed only one Tayammum (dry ablution)? Please also clarify what nullifies Tayammum.

Answer:

It is permissible to pray several prayers with one Tayammum (dry ablution). It is stated within the core texts (Mutūn) of the Hanafī school,

و يصلي بتيممه ما شاء من الفرائض و النوافل

“He may pray with his Tayammum whatever he wishes from the Farāidh and Nawāfil.”

However according to Al Imām Shāfi’ī (رضى الله عنه) you must do a separate Tayammum for each separate Fardh Salāh. It is stated in Al Hidāyah, chapter on Tayammum,

وعند الشافعي يتيمم لکل فرض لأنه طهارة ضرورية، ولنا إنه طهور حال عدم الماء فيعمل عمله ما بقي شرطه

“And according to Ash Shāfi’ī, he will perform Tayammum for every Fardh Salāh because it is classed as purifying out of necessity. According to us soil gives purity during the absence of water. Soil therefore has the same function as water so long as the conditions for permitting Tayammum persist.”

It is stated in Al ‘Ināyah:

أنه طهور أي التراب طهور بشرط عدم الماء بالنص

“It is purifying i.e. dust is purifying as proven within the clear words (of the Holy Qur’ān) with the condition that there is no access to water.”

The things that invalidate Wudhū also invalidate Tayammum. Further to them, if one finds access to enough water for the performance of Wudhū or gains the ability to use water then the Tayammum will become invalid.

It is stated in Al Hidāyah,

“و ينقض التيمم کل شيئ ينقض الوضوء و ينقضه ايضا روية الماء”

“And every such thing invalidates Tayammum which invalidates Wudhū. And seeing water also invalidates Tayammum.”
